How to write a fan letter in Korean

You want to write to your favorite idol in Korean, but you are not sure how to address them or how polite to be. This guide gives you the basic shape of a fan letter and short lines you can copy by hand. Readings use Revised Romanization (the official system) with syllables split by hyphens.

Rather have it written from your own message? Write my letter

Step 1: pick the politeness level

Korean has speech levels, and a letter to someone you admire but do not know personally should stay polite. Most fans write the bulk of the letter in the polite -요 form (the one that ends in -해요 or -이에요) and use the more formal -ㅂ니다 / -습니다 ending for thanks, the opening and the closing.

Casual speech (반말) is usually avoided in letters, even when the idol is younger than you.

Step 2: address and sign the letter

The safe, respectful way to address an idol is the name plus 님. Avoid 당신 (literally "you"): in Korean it sounds distant, and fans do not use it for people they admire. Use the name instead.

○○ 님께
○○ nim-kke
To ○○ (respectful)
팬 ○○ 드림
paen ○○ deu-rim
From your fan, ○○

Step 3: follow a six-part shape

Mix and match. Short sentences are easier to handwrite and harder to get wrong.

Mistakes that make a fan letter sound unnatural

Before you send it

Example lines and AI output are a starting point. A native speaker may choose different words, so read the meaning of every line and cut anything you are unsure about. Do not use machine-written Korean for tattoos or official documents.

Check the official notice of the idol's agency or event for how fan mail is accepted. Many do not take it by post.
